2 suspects detained after shots fired at Cave Creek Walmart during shoplifting confrontation

Witnesses told investigators that the suspects were confronted about shoplifting at the Walmart before shots were fired.

CAVE CREEK, Ariz. — Two young men have been booked into jail after one of them allegedly fired multiple gunshots during a confrontation at a Walmart in Cave Creek.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office responded Sunday afternoon to the Walmart near Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway for reports of gunshots fired outside of the store.

Deputies were told that two young men had been stopped by loss prevention officers over allegations they had shoplifted items from the store. The two subjects had agreed to pay for the items but then got into a verbal confrontation as they were exiting the store, court records show.

One of the subjects brandished a weapon and fired several shots at store employees. The two individuals then fled before deputies arrived.

No injuries were reported.

Surveillance video footage and credit card information helped investigators identify the suspects, resulting in law enforcement making arrests on Tuesday.

Court records identify the suspects as 19-year-old Aidan Eggers and 18-year-old Ryan Serban.

Eggers allegedly admitted to being involved in the shooting because he wanted to "scare" the Walmart loss prevention employees, records show.

Both suspects could be facing charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.
