Bike incident leads to police shooting in central Phoenix

The incident began after an officer almost hit a man on a bicycle. When the officer checked on him, a struggle allegedly ensued which resulted in a shooting.

PHOENIX — A suspect is facing criminal charges after he was shot by a Phoenix police officer early Monday morning. 

No officers were injured following an incident that occurred near Interstate 17 and Thomas Road at about 3:30 a.m., Phoenix police said.

The incident began after an officer almost hit a man on a bicycle near 24th Drive and Thomas Road. When the officer went to check on the man, police said the man was "non-compliant" and a struggle ensued before the man ran from the scene. 

Police said the man allegedly had a firearm and he fired several shots toward the officer.

After the man continued running from the scene, officers and a police helicopter later tracked him down. One officer fired multiple shots after the suspect allegedly reached for his waistband.

The suspect sustained at least one gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital.

Police said the man is expected to survive his injuries and will later be booked into jail. His identity has not been disclosed.

The situation has resulted in traffic being restricted on Thomas Road in both directions at the I-17 exit.
