Suspect detained after officer-involved shooting outside Hacienda Healthcare facility

According to police, no officers were injured during the incident that occurred near 16th Street and Dobbins Road in Phoenix.

PHOENIX — A suspect has been detained after a shooting Monday morning involving an outside law enforcement agency, Phoenix police said.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of Hacienda Healthcare's South Mountain facility near 16th Street and Dobbins Road, a spokesman for the company said.

According to Phoenix police, an off-duty Florence PD officer, who was working security at Hacienda, saw the suspect pointing a gun at the victim while he was standing over her while she was lying on the ground.

After the suspect did not listen to verbal commands from the officer to drop his gun, the suspect turned to run away and began firing gun shots at the victim.

The officer fired at the suspect, striking him until the suspect stopped shooting.

Hacienda Healthcare issued a statement after the shooting occurred.

"Today, shortly before 5:30 a.m., the former spouse of a Hacienda HealthCare caregiver arrived at the South Mountain facility armed with a weapon," the statement read. "This person did not gain entry to any Hacienda buildings – which are fully secured and protected by armed off-duty police officers – nor did this person contact or encounter any Hacienda residents."

The shooting occurred in the Hacienda parking lot on the east side of the facility, a company spokesman said. Exterior camera video footage of this incident is being provided to Phoenix Police investigators, the statement said.

During a morning news conference, Phoenix police released additional details from the incident. According to officials, three off-duty police officers employed by Hacienda Healthcare were patrolling the parking lot when they heard a woman screaming.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they saw the suspect was pointing a gun at a woman as he stood over her, authorities said.

The suspect is currently in critical condition at a local hospital, but police said Monday afternoon he is expected to survive.

In a release sent Monday, the Florence Police Department said the officer involved in the shooting is a veteran of the department and was hired in April 2011. The release also stated that the officer was uniformed and carrying his town-issued service weapon. The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave pending Phoenix PD's investigation, which is normal protocol.
