If there's one thing that we don't need to import to Arizona, it's sunshine, but a close second would probably be cacti.
While there are some 1,800 different varieties of cacti, perhaps the most unique kind is one you'll soon find on a stretch of Arizona Avenue between Chandler Heights and Riggs roads.
The city of Chandler is installing steel cacti - eventually 70 in all - as part of a median upgrade project.
The company that makes them is Desert Steel of Kansas.
So why would an Arizona city buy fake cacti from a Kansas company? Money and water, according to Chandler landscape compliance inspector Bart Brown.
He says the city doesn't have to spend money on irrigation lines, electricity or watering the steel plants.
As for the Kansas company, Brown says they simply came in with the lowest bid. The total cost of the project is expected to be $49,000.
