Sky Harbor sees third-most guns at TSA checkpoints

2018 was a record-breaking year for guns found at TSA checkpoints ahead of boarding planes in the U.S.

The number of guns stopped at airport checkpoints on the rise.

In 2018, 4,239 guns were stopped at checkpoints around the United States, according to the TSA.

Phoenix saw the third-most guns at checkpoints -- 129 caught by security. Only Dallas and Atlanta saw more.

Most of the time, according to the TSA, it is a case of people saying they forgot about the gun.

The number of guns stopped at checkpoints has been on the rise for the last 10 years.

In 2008, only 926 guns were stopped nationwide. That number has since quadrupled.

Phoenix has not been immune from the trend. Since 2015, the number of guns stopped has increased from 73 to 129.

TSA said it is never acceptable for a passenger to try and carry a gun onto the plane.

When a gun is found in security, the police are notified and a fine will be levied against the individual, usually starting around $2,000.

12 News reached out to Phoenix PD to ask how many people have been arrested specifically for trying to carry a gun onto a plane, but there have been no definite numbers yet.
