ADOT's confusing Broadway Curve sign has people talking

Yeah, it may look like the Eye of Sauron. But drivers should heed the sign's advice to avoid a perilous journey.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation has unveiled an extra sign intended to help with navigating around the Broadway Curve on Interstate 10. But the sign's design has left some drivers scratching their heads.

The sign's supposed to help motorists drive through the work zones around the I-10 freeway while the area remains under construction.

The new lane configuration consists of seven westbound lanes: Lanes 6 and 7 should be used of exiting onto State Route 143, Lanes 4 and 5 should be used for exiting onto 40th Street, and Lanes 1-5 can be used for through traffic.

Motorists are encouraged to drive at no more than 55 mph through the work zone.

But some are finding the new ADOT sign a bit too confusing or amusing.

"That sign is wild," one person wrote on ADOT's Facebook page.

"Looks like a new line dance," another wrote.

"They should’ve put 'be not afraid' above it," one commenter suggested.

Some commenters comically compared the sign's design to the Eye of Sauron from "The Lord of the Rings" and Edvard Munch's famous "The Scream" painting.

The graphic below offers another perspective of how the lane configuration looks:

ADOT is about halfway done with the Broadway Curve expansion project, which consists of the area between 40th Street and Baseline Road. The state agency hopes to have construction completed by the end of 2024.

ADOT has said the improvements are expected to increase freeway capacity by 60%.
