Suspect dead after shooting Tempe police officer, officials say

Officials said the Tempe police officer, who has not been identified, has been released from the hospital.

TEMPE, Ariz. — An aggravated assault suspect is dead after opening fire on police during a traffic stop, Tempe police said Tuesday night.

One officer was shot in the arm and has since been released from the hospital, Tempe police said.

Officers were attempting to stop the suspect around 9 p.m. at the Curry Road and College Avenue intersection when the suspect started firing, according to officials. Officers shot back and hit the suspect, who was pronounced dead.

It is unknown how many officers fired their weapons and the investigation is ongoing.

The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Jason A. Fox.

The identity of the injured officer has not been released.

"Every time an officer is hurt while serving and protecting our city, it resonates throughout our department and the community we serve," said Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy. "We are grateful his injuries were not more serious."
