Suspect ran from traffic stop, allegedly reached for waistband before he was shot by Phoenix police

Phoenix police say the suspect has been pronounced dead and no officers were injured.

PHOENIX — A shooting in west Phoenix left one person dead, the city's police department said. Two police officers chased the man, now identified as 46-year-old Imani Jackson, and shot him after he allegedly reached for his waistband, police said in a news conference on Saturday morning.

The shooting occurred near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road at 3:42 a.m. on Saturday.

Phoenix police said the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and no one is outstanding at this time.

Police were called to a separate scene at 3:35 a.m. in reference to a shooting, Sergeant and Public Information Officer Rob Scherer said during a news conference on Saturday morning. No officers were injured.

An individual, who may be the same person who was shot and killed, fired multiple rounds in the vicinity of multiple victims, Scherer said. No one was injured and police said an aggravated assault did occur at the first scene.

Scherer said police found a vehicle and suspect that matched the descriptions the police had been given and officers initiated a traffic stop. The suspect did not stop and ran from his vehicle. Scherer said while running, the suspect reached for his waistband, and that is when the two officers giving chase fired, shooting and ultimately killing the suspect.

A criminal and internal investigation is being conducted at the second scene. The area will be closed for several hours, Scherer said.

"We have to give these types of investigations that time, that due diligence," Scherer said. "Because when we leave we can't go backwards."
