Advisory committee looks into bringing back sex education to Scottsdale schools

The committee was formed by the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board and is comprised of 13 members including parents, nurses and teachers.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A newly formed Sex Education Advisory committee met for the first time on Valentine’s Day in an effort to bring back sex education and human growth development curriculum to Scottsdale schools.

The committee was formed by the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board and is comprised of 13 members from the community including parents, nurses, teachers and healthcare workers.

The group will review, evaluate and recommend quality and appropriate instructional resources for approval by the Governing Board.

“There’s been a lot of conversation generated by parents of fifth grade students, nurses and other stakeholders who would like to see this return,’ Scottsdale USD Associate Superintendent Karen Benson said.

The district said its sex education courses were stopped in 2020 because of COVID.

The public will have two opportunities to weigh in on recommendations on April 9 and May 24.

The board is expected to make a final vote on June 11.

Under Arizona law, the curriculum can’t be taught before the fifth grade. Parents will have the option to opt-in, or opt-out to any approved curriculum.
