PHOENIX — First responders are on the scene of a deadly crash involving two vehicles on the Gila River Indian Community.
The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon on Riggs Road near State Route 347 and involved a sedan and passenger van.
The Gila River Police Department said a man in the sedan died in the crash.
The second vehicle was a school van carrying a junior high girls' sports team. Most students in the van suffered moderate to severe injuries, police said. The number of students injured was not given.
Police said those injured in the crash have been transported to area hospitals.
Video from Sky12 showed State Route 347 backed up with traffic for what appears to be several miles.
As of Wednesday evening at 9:15 p.m. Riggs Road remains shut down due to the crash
