TEMPE, Ariz. — An underwater drone found the body of a person who reportedly went under the water at Tempe Town Lake and didn't resurface, fire and medical officials said.
According to early police reports, boats went out onto the lake around 10 p.m. Wednesday night after a witness called in the incident. First responders were unable to find the person that night.
Swimming is not allowed in Tempe Town Lake due to the lake's dangerous currents. Two people have already drowned in the lake this year.
Dive teams resumed the search between 8 and 9 a.m., Tempe fire officials said. Authorities told 12News crews on the scene that the person's body had been found.
Police identified the person as 20-year-old Elijah Province, an Arizona State University student. Police said they are investigating the incident as a suicide attempt.
