MESA, Ariz. — Scottsdale police were involved in a deadly shooting near Horne and Broadway Road in Mesa Monday as investigators attempted to rescue a kidnapping victim, the department confirmed.
Police confirmed a man was shot and killed in the incident, which took place in a parking lot close to a restaurant.
Police said the officers with Scottsdale Police Department's special assignments unit moved in to rescue a kidnapping victim, who was in a vehicle with two male suspects.
One of the suspects left the vehicle to go into a restaurant. Members of the special assignments unit then moved in to rescue the victim in the vehicle. During this interaction, the suspect who remained in the vehicle was shot and killed.
The suspect was wearing body armor when they were fatally shot and had allegedly fired at the officers, police said.
During the shooting, a detective sustained a minor injury from a bullet fragment as a result of the suspect allegedly firing at him. The detective was taken to the hospital and later released.
The victim ran from the car during the gunfire and was taken into safety.
Officers were able to get the other suspect who went into the restaurant out and he was detained, according to a 12News crew at the scene. He has been identified as Wyatt Edge. He has been charged with one count of kidnapping, according to booking paperwork.
The two suspects were allegedly involved in an armed robbery that occurred in Scottsdale weeks prior. Police said the victim's kidnapping was in relation to that robbery.
Investigators reported finding guns and ammunition in the suspect's vehicle. Identities of the suspects have not yet been disclosed.
