PHOENIX - School marquees are flashing "CLOSED."
School doors are locked.
Hallways and classrooms are dark and empty.
However, at Washington Elementary School District, cafeterias and activity rooms are full of students.
“Today, with schools being closed, we are continuing to offer meals for students and make sure they get well nourished and have a great breakfast and lunch here at school with us," said Connie Parmenter, director of nutrition services at WESD.
All kids from all school districts ages 1 through 18 can get a free breakfast and lunch at any of the 32 Washington Elementary School District locations.
“Kids are getting healthy entrees with whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and low-fat milk," said Parmenter.
Breakfast runs from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. and lunch runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This will continue as long as schools are closed.
“We want to continue this and make sure they all stay completely nourished and ready to go for when school starts up again," said Parmenter.
In addition to meals, childcare camps are being offered at 13 locations. This is only for WESD students and school-age children of WESD staff members for $20 a day.
“Our regular KIDSPACE staff at WESD will provide exciting and engaging activities for our kids like crafts, little activities and outside play. We will make sure they are having fun during the closure and staying engaged in learning," Kathleen McKeever, director of academic support programs at WESD.
The camp is offered from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day that schools are closed.
