Driver arrested for DUI after crashing into Tempe apartment building, police say

The driver is suspected of driving under the influence, Tempe police said.

PHOENIX — Some residents of a Tempe apartment complex were evacuated from their homes after a car crashed into the building late Monday night.

The crash happened near Rural Road and Rio Salado Parkway, causing some structural damage to the building.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and processed for a DUI, Tempe police said. They may be facing additional charges.

A passenger in the car stayed on scene after the crash, according to police.

"Police will remain on scene until a structural engineer deems the vehicle can be safely removed from the building," officials said.

The driver's identity hasn't been released.
