'Chairs and cushions on fire': Vandalism reported at a 55+ community in Queen Creek

Police responded to several calls on Saturday of damage at the Ovation at Meridian community located near Meridian and Ocotillo roads.

QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. — Tammy Brown called 911 after 4 a.m. on Saturday when rocks were being thrown at her house.

While Brown was unable to see who was throwing the rocks, the damage left behind is still visible: From a hole in a window and chipped glass on other panes.

"Until it happens to you, you don't realize how violated you feel," Brown said.

It happened in a 55+ community in Queen Creek.

The Queen Creek Police Department told 12News they received several calls Saturday morning and have at least three reports of damage in and surrounding the Ovation at Meridian community, including to the community's recreation center.

"It could have been a lot worse," Brown said. "The clubhouse window was totally shattered."

A spokesperson for Queen Creek Police Department said the agency also responded to spray paint on a wall and damage to the community's recreation center.

"They put all the chairs and cushions on fire, the umbrellas on fire, they threw giant rocks at the TV and totally smashed it," Brown said.

Police have not identified any suspects.

The home building company, Taylor Morrison, shared security video with 12News that was also shared with Queen Creek police. The video shows suspects already inside the community's recreation area, as well as the glow of fire and a glass window that was broken.

In a statement to 12News, a spokesperson for Taylor Morrison said:

"We take the safety of our homeowners and community seriously and are deeply saddened by the recent vandalism. We’re working closely with Queen Creek Police Department and have supplied security footage of the incident to support their investigation. As additional security measures and to help ease our residents’ minds, we’re installing more cameras at strategic locations identified by Queen Creek PD as potential unauthorized access points to the community, and have hired an off-duty officer for security."

Queen Creek police told 12News they're investigating if the calls are related and they're increasing patrols in the area.

"When the police were here, he said: 'It's Friday night — first spring break night — kids just into all kinds of trouble,'" Brown said.

Brown said she wants questions answered and safety back in her neighborhood.

"There's so much going on about teenagers and violence and I just don't want our neighborhood to be targeted," Brown said.
