CHANDLER, Ariz. — A driver was shot in the face Thursday while traveling on I-10 on the edge of the Gila River Indian Community, officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

Troopers and officers from the Gila River Police Department responded to a gas station just west of I-10 and Wild Horse Pass around 4:40 p.m. for reports of shots fired, a statement from AZDPS said. They found a person who had been shot in the face, who was taken to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition, the statement said.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are currently under investigation, although it is believed the victim was shot while traveling on eastbound I-10 between Chandler Boulevard and Wild Horse Pass," DPS officials said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the AZDPS tip line at 602-223-2212.
