PHOENIX (AP) - Police say a teenage boy has died after another teen was playing with a gun that went off in a west Phoenix home.

Phoenix Police Department spokeswoman Mercedes Fortune says the shooting happened Thursday night at a residence near Thomas Road and 67th Avenue.

Responding officers say they were initially told the 17-year-old boy had shot himself while others were in the home.

Fortune says inconsistencies at the scene led investigators to learn that 18-year-old Jose Heredia-Garcia had been playing with a handgun when the victim was shot.

Police arrested Heredia-Garcia on charges of manslaughter and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor.

Heredia-Garcia was not in the United States legally, and is not a citizen, he told police.
