TEMPE, Ariz. — A man is dead following a shooting involving Tempe police in the area of Baseline and Rural roads Monday afternoon.
Tempe police officers were dispatched to a parking lot for reports of a possible car burglary. Upon arrival, officers located the man believed to be trying to break into a car and tried to make contact.
Officers lost sight of the suspect but later found him in a stairwell. The man was given commands by the officers to show his hands, in which he allegedly reacted by pulling a handgun out of his backpack.
A Tempe police officer responded by shooting at the suspect and a police dog was deployed to grab the suspect, police said. The second officer had switched to their less-lethal taser during the encounter, police said.
