Phoenix police shoot, kill stabbing suspect

The incident started with a fight at a gas station where a man was stabbed. The suspect was later shot by a police officer and died. Here are all the details.

PHOENIX — A man has died after a shooting involving Phoenix Police officers, the department announced Saturday night.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Melissa Soliz said the incident started around 2 p.m. on Saturday with a fight at a gas station at the intersection of 44th Street and McDowell Road. During that fight, a man was stabbed.

The suspect in the stabbing, identified as 37-year-old Alton Tungovia, then left the scene, heading east on McDowell.

Phoenix Police officers found Tungovia at 49th Street and McDowell and say he was holding an unidentified object.

Officers gave him commands, but Tungovia yelled back at officers and continued to walk away from them while weaving in and out of traffic.

One officer then fired a pepper ball at Tungovia to try and subdue him, but that was unsuccessful and he continued to walk east on McDowell toward a strip mall while holding the unidentified object. That is when an officer shot him.

Tungovia was taken to a hospital where he died.

The stabbing victim was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, but is expected to recover.

Sgt. Soliz said detectives will be at the scene of the shooting all Saturday night collecting evident and talking to witnesses and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
