Alleged carjacker shot, killed by Phoenix police

The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. on Monday near 62nd Avenue and McDowell Road when the man pulled a gun on officers, police said.

PHOENIX — Phoenix police shot and killed a man who allegedly pulled a gun on officers late Monday night. No officers were hurt.

The incident started just before 11 p.m. near 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street where police saw a vehicle speeding. Police tried to pull the vehicle over but it didn't stop, a spokesman with city police said.

At one point, the driver got out of the car and was seen attempting to take another vehicle at gunpoint. The other car drove off and the man got back in his original car.

He continued driving to the area of 62nd Avenue and McDowell Road where he got out again and ran towards other vehicles on the road with a gun in hand, police said.

It was at that point that officers shot the man and took his gun away. First responders took him to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

He's been identified as 37-year-old Miguel Godines.  Detectives are still working to learn more about the incident.
