Police ID additional suspects in Avondale bank robbery pursuit, shooting

Phoenix police identified the two remaining suspects in a bank robbery that ended in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon.

PHOENIX - Phoenix police identified the two remaining suspects in a bank robbery that ended in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested Sergio Escobedo, 19, and Ruben Rodriguez, 31, after they fled from a vehicle during a police pursuit following the robbery of the Credit Union West near 5th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

According to court paperwork, Escobedo was identified as the one who was firing at the pursuing officer from the back seat of the vehicle.

According to police, Rodriguez said he needed the money to pay off a drug debt.

Rodriguez faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery and illegal possession of a weapon. Escobedo faces two counts of armed robbery and two counts of aggravated assault of an officer.

The driver of the vehicle, Steven Del Rio, 31, was pursued by police until officers were able to implement a pit maneuver.

A confrontation subsequently occurred and Del Rio was shot and killed by officers.

The value of property taken or damaged is approximately $11,000, according to court paperwork.
