PHOENIX — Two weeks ago, Wendy Clay got a little stir crazy sitting inside all day complying with the social distance rule. So, she came up with a humorous way to lift her neighbors' spirits.
“It started out with the bunnies. So, then I moved over to the gnome and finally, I ended up with Daryl back there.”
Clay dressed up some lawn characters in topical costumes: a pair of bunnies wearing medical masks standing by a sign wishing everyone a Happy Easter.
There’s a garden gnome wearing a mask standing on a roll of toilet paper holding a sign that reads, “Don’t Stop Me. I’m on a roll.”
Then there is Daryl. An inflatable doll dressed up in a Hawaiian shirt reading a book called, “Coronavirus for Dummies.”
In these uncertain times, it’s hard to make complete sense of the coronavirus pandemic. So, Clay wanted to lift spirits the best way she knows how.
“I want to share the laugh,” said Clay. “I figured people can make masks. People can make music, but I can make smiles.”
Neighbors are noticing and can’t wait to see what’s next.
“Most of them take pictures. It’s getting a lot of attention,” said Dave Burkle. Clay’s neighbor.
Clay, who survived lung cancer, has always believed humor can get people through the darkest days.
“I have an old line. He who laughs – lasts. And I truly believe that,” said Clay.
