Phoenix teen outsmarts cop impersonator

A North Phoenix mom has a warning to parents after her daughter was almost pulled over by a man impersonating an officer.

PHOENIX - A North Phoenix mom has a warning to all parents after her daughter was almost pulled over by a man impersonating an officer.

The fake cop is still out there, so she wanted to remain anonymous, but says her daughter was lucky to get away.

Her daughter was driving to work on Nov. 7 when a man pulled up behind her in a seemingly unmarked police vehicle.

"He was tailgating her, being erratic, flashing a badge at her," said the girl's mom.

The mom says the man was flailing his arms at stoplights to get her attention, even flashing what the daughter told her mom appeared to be a fake badge.

The teen could feel something was off and called 911.

The dispatcher was able to do a blind call to check all frequencies of marked and unmarked police vehicles near her and confirmed no officers were pulling anyone over in her area.

Phoenix PD confirmed the incident happened, and say the teen did the right thing.

The dispatcher told the teen to pull into a well-lit area, where a real police officer met her.

Phoenix PD said sometimes an unmarked car and officer in plain clothes might stop a car, but you can and should always continue driving to a public place.

You can ask an officer for his or her commission card as well, to prove they are legitimate.

Lastly, if you feel something is really off, you can call 911, just like the teen did.

"This could have been somebody who was just trying to be a smart alack, and trying to scare her," her mom said. "We don't know. It's always better to be safe than sorry because she got to come home that night."
