PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is warning residents to be cautious about individuals calling from one of the agency's phone numbers and demanding money.

On Wednesday, the law enforcement agency said it had seen an increase in reports of scammers using Phoenix's Crime Stop phone number and impersonating government officials to solicit money from citizens.

The 602-262-6151 number can be used by residents to file police reports or request the assistance of an officer. Police officials said they've become aware of scammers "spoofing" the phone number to request payments from individuals.

"The Phoenix Police Department will never contact you to solicit anything including bank account information, remote access to your computer, money orders or gift cards," the agency wrote in a statement.

The Crime Stop number is not used for outgoing calls. The police department urged residents to contact the agency if they're suspicious about a phone call that appears to be from the department.
