Phoenix police shoot, kill man allegedly involved in homicide earlier in the day

The incident occurred Thursday evening near 27th Avenue and Cactus Road in north Phoenix. No officers were injured, authorities say.

PHOENIX — A homicide suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Devin Montgomery, died Thursday after being shot by Phoenix police, according to the Phoenix Police Department. 

Officers responded to a shooting call near 33rd Drive and Northern Avenue around 2:15 p.m., police officials said. They arrived and found an adult man, identified as Brandon Russell, 29, with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. 

The suspect, Montgomery, was later tracked down to an apartment complex near 27th Avenue and Cactus Road, officials said. Montgomery pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at a responding officer. One bullet hit the officer's vehicle. The officer returned fire and hit Montgomery 

Montgomery was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.
