Wrong-way driver dies after crashing into Phoenix light rail

The train was going southbound on 1st Avenue when the vehicle was going the wrong way on Washington.

Police said a wrong-way driver died after crashing into a Phoenix light rail car early Sunday morning.

The incident happened near 1st Avenue and Washington Street around 2 a.m. The train was going southbound on 1st Avenue when the vehicle was going the wrong way on Washington.

Tommy Thompson with Phoenix PD said the driver, 30-year-old Tameka Talise Spence, was killed in the crash. 

The crash derailed the train and knocked down a traffic signal light pole on the southwest corner of the intersection as well.

The operator of the train and the two adult passengers onboard were not injured.

Police evaluated the driver of the light rail train for impairment and determined the driver was not impaired.

Police say they do not know if the driver of the vehicle was impaired at the time but said speed played a role in the crash.

Valley Metro said they experienced 20-minute delays because of the crash.
