Phoenix plans to pay $5M to settle Ali Osman lawsuit

Ali Osman was shot by police last year after he allegedly threw rocks. The Phoenix City Council is scheduled to review a proposed settlement on Wednesday.

PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix has proposed paying over $5 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a man shot by police officers last year.

Ali Osman was fatally shot last September after he allegedly threw rocks at a police cruiser near 19th Avenue and Tuckey Lane. Police said the 34-year-old ignored commands from officers before shots were fired.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office declined to criminally prosecute the officers because the rocks thrown by Osman "posed a serious threat."

Osman's relatives later filed a civil lawsuit that accused the Phoenix police officers of using excessive force.

Public records show the city has agreed to pay $5.5 million to resolve the case. The Phoenix City Council will review the settlement during a meeting on Nov. 1.
