The crash happened on Aug. 23 near 39th Avenue and McDowell Road. According to a police report, Zermeno was driving in the area when another vehicle made a left turn into the intersection she was passing through, and the two struck each other.

Zermeno's vehicle then collided with another car before rolling multiple times. She and her 6-year-old daughter who was also in the car were rushed to the hospital.

The driver of the second car was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The man driving the third car wasn't hurt, police said.

Fortunately, Zermeno's daughter's injuries weren't life-threatening, and the family said that she has been released from the hospital to recover.

What is the Valley?:

“The Valley” is what locals call the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. It is considered the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest.

The Valley is made up of various major cities other than Phoenix, including:

  • Mesa
  • Chandler
  • Scottsdale
  • Tempe
  • Glendale
  • Surprise
  • Peoria
  • Gilbert
  • El Mirage
  • Avondale
  • Litchfield Park
  • Goodyear
  • Buckeye

Whether a city is in the “East Valley” or “West Valley” depends on where it is in relation to Phoenix.

The cities of the Valley have a combined population of 4,845,832 people, according to the 2020 United States Census. This makes it the 11th largest metropolitan area in the country right behind the Boston and Atlanta areas.
