A 31-year-old mother and her 5-year-old son were killed in a four-vehicle crash on State Route 51 Monday evening, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
Jennifer Vegtel and her son, Logan, suffered fatal injuries in the crash, DPS said.
According to DPS, the crash happened just before 6 p.m. when a gray 2003 Chevrolet pickup crashed into the rear of a blue 2005 Kia sedan.
DPS said the driver of the pickup was 34-year-old Edgar Ramos-Esteban. Vegtel was driving the Kia with her son in the car.
The impact caused a chain-reaction crash, DPS said. The Kia crashed into the back of a blue 2015 Volkswagen sedan which then crashed into a white 2018 Isuzu truck.
The driver of the Volkswagen was a 48-year-old man and the driver of the truck was a 49-year-old man, DPS said.
DPS said Edgar Ramos-Esteban was "cited on-scene" while the driver of the Volkswagen was taken to a local hospital.
Vegtel is survived by her husband, Logan's father. Her family said her son was her life.
