PHOENIX — Several dogs are alive this morning thanks to Phoenix firefighters, authorities said.

Phoenix firefighters responded to a home near 24th and Van Buren streets around 1 a.m. Sunday. When firefighters got to the scene, they found a large amount of smoke and fire that was quickly spreading to vehicles and nearby homes, authorities said.

While extinguishing the fire, firefighters located several dogs and brought them out to safety using medical equipment specifically designed for dogs called Fido Bags. Some of the dogs died in the fire. Authorities did not say why there were dogs in the building or if there were any people in the building.

Firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire before it spread to more homes and vehicles, authorities said. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and no injuries were reported.
