Phoenix city council members resign to run for mayor

A special election to fill vacated city council seats will take place in March.
Kate Gallego (D) and Daniel Valenzuela (D) have both resigned from the Phoenix City Council to run for mayor.

PHOENIX — Phoenix City Councilwoman Kate Gallego has resigned from her post to run for mayor, according to a release from the city sent Tuesday.

She joins former Councilman Daniel Valenzuela, who vacated his seat to run for mayor in July.

The two former city council members announced their intentions to run for the position after Greg Stanton resigned as mayor in May to run for U.S. Congress.
