PHOENIX — Time to toss out that Phoenix trash collection calendar. The city is soon moving to an appointment-based model.
The City of Phoenix recently changed the process of bulk trash collection and will move to appointment-based pick-up starting Sept. 30.
This new program will offer Phoenix residents the flexibility to schedule their own bulk trash collection via an online portal. Before the change, people needed to wait for quarterly bulk trash pickup on the dates assigned to their area.

City officials said all bulk trash collection on or after Sept. 30 should be scheduled online.
According to the City of Phoenix website, residents will still be allowed to schedule four separate pick-ups each year.
Phoenix officials offered the following program benefits via a news release:
- Customers have the convenience of scheduling a pickup based on their own projects, yard work, clean-ups, or storms.
- Trash piles will be left out for a significantly shorter amount of time.
- The new model will not allow customers to schedule collection during blackout dates surrounding four holidays (including Halloween), thus preventing unsightly trash from piling up when visitors are in town.
- Public Works will be able to build collection routes according to scheduled appointments, rather than having to drive down every street looking for bulk trash piles.
