PD: No suspect found after shooting near Phoenix elementary school, investigation ongoing

Police said the shooting happened near 48th Street and McDowell Road Thursday morning. School is expected to start as normal.

A man is hospitalized after a shooting in Phoenix on Thursday.

Around 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a shooting call near 48th Street and McDowell Road, Phoenix police said. As police arrived on the scene, officers found a man with a gunshot wound. Authorities said the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said additional property damage was seen in the area. According to Phoenix PD, the shooting suspect was seen running into nearby Brunson Lee Elementary School.

Police searched the school and found that the suspect had already left. No arrests have been made at this time.

The school superintendent told 12News crews on the scene that school will be starting as usual. They said that the shooter jumped a fence into the schoolyard, then jumped back out into a nearby apartment complex.

School administrators are expected to be contacting parents about the incident along with plans for the school as the investigation progresses.

Officials said 48th Street will be closed between McDowell Road and Culver Street during the police situation and residents should avoid the area. Other parts of the neighborhood will also be shut down due to the investigation.
