Phoenix police have recommended additional murder charges against accused "canal killer" Bryan Miller, but the Maricopa County Attorney's Office sent the case back for additional investigation.
Miller is accused of killer Angela Brosso and Melanie Bernas in the early 1990's. Both were found dead along the Arizona canal near Sunnyslope.
Since his arrest, Phoenix police detectives have been going back through cold cases in the area, looking for anything that might match up to Miller.
Phoenix Police Department spokesman Trent Crump said there are two cases that stick out; Brandy Meyers and Shannon Aumock.
Meyers went missing in 1992 while selling door to door for a school fundraiser near 10th Street and Hatcher. Days of searching never turned up her body, and no arrests were made.
Miller lived just blocks from where Meyers was last seen, leading police to look closer at the case.
"His wife in this particular case came forward with information about him," Crump said.
Amy Miller, now Bryan Miller's ex-wife, told The Arizona Republic that Miller confessed to the murder of a teenage girl, but she thought he was just trying to intimidate her.
Miller allegedly told his wife he had killed a girl who was selling girl scout cookies, cut her up and put her in trash bags before throwing her in his trash can.
Police will not say what other evidence they have to connect Miller with Meyers's death, but investigators recommended first degree murder charges be filed.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office declined to file charges, and referred the case back to the police department for further investigation.
Police are also looking closely at another murder in the same area, just one day after Meyers went missing, Crump said.
Shannon Aubock's body was found by the canal near 20th Street and Deer Valley. Police have not filed any charges in that case, but Crump said they're still following leads.
