PHOENIX — A motorcyclist has died in a crash on I-17, according to authorities.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the crash happened on Sunday just before 1 p.m. near milepost 203.
The motorcyclist was seen driving at "a high rate of speed" before the crash, DPS said.
"The motorcyclist lost control and struck the ground causing severe head and neck injury," DPS said.
The individual was rushed to the hospital and later died. Their name has not been released.
The motorcycle crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-17 just after a four-vehicle crash, that caused a car fire, happened on the northbound lanes.
DPS said it is possible that the car fire crash led to traffic backup that contributed to the motorcycle crash.
This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
