New teen tech center opens at Phoenix Boys & Girls Club

Drones, virtual reality and 3D printers. It's all part of a cool new tech center, just for high school teens after class.

A complete digital makeover! Drones, virtual reality and 3D printers. It’s all part of a cool new tech center, just for high school teens after class.

The doors officially open here at the Best Buy Teen Tech Center at the Jerry Colangelo branch Wednesday! The center is addressing the nation’s opportunity gap by offering teens free, year-round, hands-on technology access and education in an after-school setting.

Most of the teens from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix live at or below the federal poverty level and many of these kids don’t have access to technology at home, so this is going to make a big difference.

Now they can enjoy a state-of-the-art tech center with graphic programs, 3-D printers, virtual reality programs, green screen technology, drones, a recording studio and a whole lot more thanks to a big grant from Best Buy.

This after school program at the branch is FREE to members. It costs $15 per year for a membership and they have access to sports, academic support, dinner among other things until 8 p.m. every night.

Teens can try out different programs, creating things like art and music. There’s nothing quite like this program. It’s a safe club environment with Youth Development Professionals to support the kids. Today everyone at the center is getting ready for the grand opening. They will except 100 VIPs including Congressman Ruben Gallego.

The grand opening is at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix - Jerry Colangelo Branch which is at 1755 North 35th Avenue.
