A new member has joined the Citizens Clean Elections Commission to replace a commissioner whose term expired.

Independent Mark Kimble will serve a five-year term. The longtime Tucson journalist later served as communications director for former Reps. Gabby Giffords and Ron Barber.

Kimble replaces Timothy Reckart, a Pima County Republican. The other four current commissioners include another independent, two Democrats and a Republican.

Senate minority leader Katie Hobbs chose Kimble. The commission announced his appointment Thursday.

The commission oversees administration of the Citizens Clean Elections Act, including voter education and campaign finance programs. Members must not have run for or served in public office for five years. No more than two members of any political party or from the same county can serve at a time.
