MESA, Ariz. - A man was fatally shot by Mesa police officers while he was carrying a pistol-like BB gun Saturday evening.
Police identified the man as 53-year-old Michael D. Fletcher on Sunday.
Officers arrived around 5 p.m. to a private residence near McKellips and Gilbert roads Saturday, according to a police release. They found a man with a gun who yelled at them and walked back inside his home.
Police say he came back out of the home with what appeared to be a gun, which he raised. An officer fired at him.
According to police, the BB gun was located near Fletcher's body after the shooting. The Mesa Police Department released a stock photo of the weapon seen by officers.
