MESA, Ariz. — An investigation is underway after a Mesa police officer fatally shot a man who reportedly pointed a weapon at police, the department said.
The incident started around 2 a.m. near Broadway and Signal Butte roads when the officer tried to stop 37-year-old Edward Johnson, who was riding bicycle in the area. Johnson allegedly ran away along the canal before the officer found him in a nearby wash.
According to police, Johnson pulled out an unspecified weapon and pointed it at the officer. The officer then shot him.
First responders took Johnson the hospital where he later died. According to a Mesa police report, a replica gun was found on the ground next to Johnson.
Investigators learned that Johnson had a warrant for his arrest out of Pinal County for probation violation on a drug possession charge
The Chandler Police Department will be handling the investigation. Police aren't looking for any other suspects.

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
