Mesa offering new tool for residents looking to transition from grass

The tool is part of the city's Grass-to-Xeriscape Landscape Incentive and makes the conversion away from a grass yard easier.

MESA, Ariz. — The City of Mesa is making it easier for residents who want to use less water by doing away with their grass.

The city has launched a new one-of-a-kind tool called the Plant Square Footage Calculator

It's part of the city's Grass-to-Xeriscape Landscape Incentive and makes the conversion away from a grass yard easier.

“Based on feedback we’ve received from customers, we wanted to simplify this process by reducing some of their frustration with plant selection,” said the city's environmental and sustainability department director, Scott Bouchie.

The tool's features help residents create their list of plants and trees for their Grass-to-Xeriscape Landscape plan.

The tool can be used for the following:

  • Search by plant type, such as trees or shrubs
  • Search by plant name
  • Individual plant square footage
  • A personalized, printable plant list
  • Links to specific plant details
  • Canopy coverage running totals.

According to the city, to qualify for the Grass-to-Xeriscape Landscape incentive the converted grass area must be replaced with low-water-using plants that, at full maturity, will cover at least 50 percent of the area.

“We hope this new calculator will make the process easier and entice more customers to take advantage of the incentives," said Bouchie.
