Self-service library facility to open in Mesa

The facility will allow patrons to access resources without staff onsite, such as WiFi and self-checkout machines.

MESA, Ariz. — Monterey Park in Mesa is expanding to include a new “express library,” a self-service facility for community members to check out books, enjoy a book in one of the reading areas and utilize public WiFi.

The renovations to the park, located northeast of Power and Guadalupe, are happening currently and include the Mesa Express Library, part of the Mesa Public Library system. The site uses expanded access technology to allow for patrons to visit the library during open hours without staff onsite, by using their library barcode and pin.

The express library is located east of the softball fields in Monterey Park. It has hold lockers, popular books for multiple ages, self-checkout machines, public WiFi, reading areas and external return bins. The books at the express library are non-holdable, non-renewable books you can check out on a first-come first-serve basis.

Before speeding over to the express library, head to a full service location first to get Expanded Access added to your library card. Once you sign up, you can enter the express library location by scanning your library barcode and entering your pin at the door to the site.

Not into all tech all the time? The express library has you covered. Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a live agent will be available through a video chat kiosk located in the lobby. A live agent is also available via chat on the Mesa Public Library homepage, or by phone Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The official opening of the express library at Monterey Park is Saturday Oct. 28 at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 7045 E. Monterey Ave. Mesa, Arizona 85209.

Looking for another expanded access location? Dobson Ranch Library has one, too, open Monday through Saturday.
