Mesa City Council approves proposal to buy hotel to use as temporary shelter for people who are homeless

The hotel slated to be converted into homeless housing is the Grand Hotel near Power Road and Main Street.

MESA, Ariz. — The Mesa City Council has approved the rezoning of a hotel so that it can be turned into a shelter for people who are homeless.

The rezone was narrowly approved Monday night in a 4-3 vote.

“This is a more compassionate response, this is a more financially responsible response,” said Mesa Mayor John Giles.

The hotel slated to be converted into homeless housing is the Grand Hotel near Power Road and Main Street. The 70-room property would be used for the city's Off the Streets program.

The project has been a source of contention among Mesa residents with some believing the shelter is needed while others are concerned that it would make the surrounding neighborhoods less safe.

At Monday's meeting, 21 people asked to speak. Of those people, 11 were in favor of the project.

"This is something our City can be a stalwart and a beacon of light to help people in this community," said Pastor David Wade.

“This project will serve women and children,” said resident Betsy Flatten.

Three of the speakers had even been part of the city's Off the Streets program.

“If I didn’t have a stepping stone to get where I’m at today by having somewhere to stay and get through this situation, I would still be homeless,” said Hans Ray.

Nine people said they don’t want crime in the community and are concerned about tax dollars going toward the project.

"Not in my backyard," said Allen Tom.

State representative Barbara Parker also spoke against the project.

“It’s inhumane, it’s not a good policy and it is actually human trafficking for profit,” Rep. Parker said.

According to the city, the hotel will be purchased for $7.4 million using federal relief money.

After the hotel is purchased, officials said they expect it to be up and running within two years.
