PHOENIX — An apartment fire in Phoenix Tuesday night left one man severely hurt and multiple people displaced from their homes, the city fire department confirmed.

Fire crews were called to an apartment fire near Thunderbird Road and 19th Avenue in north Phoenix around 10 p.m. There they found flames coming from the first floor of a two-story apartment and quickly began search-and-rescue efforts.

During their search of the apartment, firefighters found an adult man unconscious and not breathing. First responders got him out of the apartment and rushed him to the hospital in "extremely critical condition," Phoenix Fire Department Captain Todd Keller said.

Two units were affected by the fire and the department is still working to determine the total number of people who will be displaced.

No firefighters were hurt during the incident and investigators are still working to learn the cause of the fire. The man's current condition is unknown.
