Loop 202 Red Mountain eastbound reopened Tuesday afternoon after a fatal wreck closed eastbound lanes at Gilbert Road shortly after 2 p.m.
Aerial video showed one vehicle badly damaged and a downed light pole as crews worked the scene.
Arizona DOT officials say the vehicle struck the light pole.
At about 2:50 p.m., ADOT tweeted that the backup was more than a mile long, urging drivers to exit at SR 87 or before.
