Loop 202 fight heads to federal court

A fight over the expansion of Loop 202 will head to court Wednesday morning, as the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration battle two lawsuits.

PHOENIX - A fight over the expansion of Loop 202 will head to court Wednesday morning, as the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration battle two lawsuits.

Construction is set to start this summer to expand Loop 202 from I-10 and Pecos Road, past Ahwatukee to reconnect with I-10 at 59th Avenue in the West Valley.

The project would relieve traffic congestion, according to proponents.

It has already resulted in the demolition of several homes in Ahwatukee.

Gila River Indian Community officials say the project does not consider cultural or spiritual concerns, given the extended highway would cut through sacred tribal land.

ADOT and the FHA will deliver arguments against the lawsuits at U.S. District Court in Phoenix. Meantime, a protest is planned outside during the hearing.
