PHOENIX — A section of Thunderbird Road is closed off while Phoenix police respond to a fatal incident near Interstate 17 on Wednesday.
Thunderbird Road from 31st Avenue to the I-17 freeway was closed down as police responded to an incident that led to an officer-involved shooting, authorities said.
Phoenix police stated the shooting took place near 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road after officers responded to reports of a subject with a gun at a local restaurant. The suspect is deceased and no officers were injured, police said.
Several police cars could be seen parked around a QuikTrip gas station located near Thunderbird Road and 30th Avenue.
Phoenix police said the east and west sides of Thunderbird Road in this area will be closed to traffic for an extended period.
Phoenix police noted that Wednesday's incident was the 20th police shooting reported this year in Phoenix.
The off-ramps to I-17 are also closed. Avoid the area.
