8-year-old boy dies after being hit by same car he was riding in moments before in Peoria, police say

Possible impairment of the driver is being investigated, but officials said no one has been arrested at this time.

PEORIA, Ariz — An 8-year-old Peoria boy died after he was run over by a car he had exited moments before, Peoria police said.

The boy was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries, police said.

Speed has been ruled out as a factor but police said possible impairment of the driver is being investigated.

Police said no arrests have been made and it appears to have been a "tragic event."

“The loss of life is always difficult, but such a tragedy can affect not only the family of the child involved but the entire community as well. I ask that you keep the family involved and the affected community in your thoughts and prayers moving forward,” says Peoria Police Chief Thom Intrieri.

The crash happened on a residential road near Vistancia Boulevard and Ridgeline Road, police said. Officials said the boy "exited the vehicle while it was still in motion" and was then run over.

The death is still being investigated.

The boy was a second grader at Vistancia Elementary School in Peoria. The principal sent a note to the school community to let them know the school would be providing support for students and staff as they process the loss.

"In the wake of this loss, you may observe your child expressing some common symptoms of grief. These symptoms include fatigue, tears, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, or complaints of headaches and stomachaches," principal Megan Bennett said. "It's possible that other students may also feel anxious about their own well-being or concerned with the well-being of their family and friends. Encouraging open communication and providing reassurance is essential for children who are coping with loss."

The grief support team will be at the school tomorrow and will be available to anyone who needs it, Bennett said.
