PHOENIX - Anyone walking around Phoenix's Melrose District Monday might notice a colorful addition to the intersection of 7th and Glenrosa avenues.
A rainbow crosswalk was added to the intersection overnight. It's one of the two approved by the Phoenix City Council back in April.
"The Melrose area is usually the starting point for LGBTQ tourists and locals," Phoenix Pride writes on its website.
The other rainbow-painted crosswalk is at the crossing of Central Avenue and Portland Street in downtown Phoenix.
The Phoenix City Council voted unanimously to paint the crosswalks to show support for the LGBTQ community and promote equal treatment and rights. The painted crosswalks also act as a "symbol of inclusively," according to thew city.
"Phoenix is committed to ensuring equal treatment and rights for everyone and showing our support because we know diversity makes us stronger,” former Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said in a release.
The rainbow crosswalks were funded by donors.
