If you hear sirens in the West Valley, it might be the nuclear plant conducting tests

Maricopa County says siren tests will be conducted over the next month at the Palo Verde Generating Station.

TONOPAH, Ariz. — Residents in the West Valley who hear an emergency siren over the next month shouldn't be alarmed.

The Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management said "growl" tests will be conducted at the Palo Verde Generating Station, located west of Buckeye, and should be completed by Dec. 22.

These tests involve the station's 70 emergency sirens being activated for about 15 seconds.

"These tests are performed only during the day and have a low-pitched sound," county officials said. "If you hear one of these tests, there is no need to call the plant."

Palo Verde is known as the only desert nuclear plant in the western hemisphere. The power generated at the station serves customers in Arizona, California, Texas, and New Mexico.
