Husband, wife found 'unresponsive' in Mesa home

The wife died at the scene and the husband was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries, police say.

MESA, Ariz. — The Mesa Police Department is investigating a possible murder-suicide attempt after a husband and wife were found unresponsive at a local residence.

Officers were dispatched Wednesday at about 3 p.m. to an east Mesa home near Guadalupe and Hawes roads. Upon arrival, they found a husband and wife who were "bloodied" and non-responsive, police said.

The wife was pronounced deceased at the scene and the husband was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries. 

Evidence collected at the scene suggests one of the individuals was murdered and the other attempted suicide. Police said the medical examiner is working to determine the wife's cause of death.

The case remains under investigation and the identity of the deceased individual was not disclosed.

The county contains around 63% of Arizona’s population and is 9,224 square miles. That makes the county larger than seven U.S. states (Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire).

One of the largest park systems in the nation is also located in Maricopa County. The county has an estimated 120,000 acres of open space parks that includes hundreds of miles of trails, nature centers and campgrounds.

The county’s seat is located in Phoenix, which is also the state capital and the census-designated 5th most populous city in the United States.

The county was named after the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American Tribe.
